My name is Jessica Peconi – I’m a Health and Physical Education teacher in Pittsburgh as well as the Vice President of Physical Education for the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. (Whew! PSAHPERD for short).

This fall, an iPhone, a Blue Toyota Corolla and myself have gone all over Pittsburgh to find out what people in the 'Burgh are doing to stay active.  The project came to me as an idea from a fellow PSAHPERD Board member, Bev Martin, as she proposed the "90 Challenge."  Do something with the number 90 and health and wellness.  90, because the organization that encourages active and healthy lifestyles by all people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is celebrating 90 young years this weekend.  Happy 90th, PSAHPERD.

My hope for the "Get Active, Pittsburgh!" project  was to find people from ages 1-90 doing anything to stay physically active.  From professional athletes, to middle school students, attorneys, teachers, artists, drummers, grandmas (mine to be specific!) future designers and choreographers.  You name it, I've met them, and have been changed because of them.

I cannot thank those of you enough that I have met along the way.  One person in particular, Brian Engel of the Pittsburgh Glass Center said something to me that still resounds in my head.  If you've never had the chance to see or try glass blowing, you need to check it out! It is an art form that requires patience, attention to detail, quick thinking, team work, stamina and strength.  Brian said to me, "Glass is destined to break."  Time for a metaphor folks.  Even the most beautiful and ornate pieces are destined to break one day, but the time, effort and care that went into sculpting them was worth the while.  Think of an artist working on one project.  The piece they are creating is unique and personal, there is only ONE of it.   Take the time to lead a healthy and active lifestyle because there is only ONE unique you.  One body, one mind, one life.  Go out and get active, Pittsburgh.

In health and wellness,
-Jessica
